Bio

Brent and Melanie Palmer, along with their children, Jordan, Eric, and Jennifer are missionaries with Mission Aviation Fellowship serving in Sentani, Papua, Indonesia. After seven years serving at the interior base of Wamena, the Palmer family made the move to Sentani in June 2005, in order to better meet the needs of the MAF Papua program.

Brent has flown thousands of hours serving the local church, people, and expatriate community. He also manages the IT department for the Papua program which has included tutoring seven summer IT interns, and overseeing the short-term staff in the IT department in Sentani. Brent’s work in IT has included upgrading the email system two times, as well as helping implement two satellite Internet connections for the MAF offices. He has also written computer programs for the flight and finance departments.

Melanie has been teaching English as a Second Language at Hillcrest International School since August 2005.  She has found this a challenging position.  However, the fruit of her labor is observable in the students who progress in their proficiency of the English language and successfully function in the classroom.

For Brent, an important verse is Psalm 116:2. “Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live.”  “It reminds me why I love the Lord and encourages me to continue giving Him my all each day.”

Melanie has been especially challenged and encouraged by Colossians 3:12-15. She is reminded of the importance of one’s attitude as it contributes to the overall condition of God’s people, “And above all these (compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, patience, forgiveness) put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.”

Brent grew up in Tyler, TX. At age eight, through the ministry of Vacation Bible School in his church, Brent accepted Christ as his personal Lord and Savior. He grew in his spiritual walk and, in the summer following high school graduation, was convinced that he should be in full-time ministry.

Melanie was raised in Kansas City, MO, and the Chicago, IL area. Melanie was 27 when she became a Christian. Persistent friends and genuine love from a singles group led her to Christ in 1981. By the fall of 1984, Melanie enrolled in a missions preparation program at her church and made several mission trips, including a summer ministering in the outback of Alaska.

Brent received a bachelor’s degree in computer science at Baylor University and earned a bachelor’s in Aviation Technology with a minor in Bible at LeTourneau University. He holds a commercial pilot’s license with an instrument rating.

Melanie has a B.S. in Speech Communication and Sociology from Illinois State University and a B.A. in Cross-Cultural Studies and Bible from Arizona College of the Bible.

Brent and Melanie met in the singles group at Scottsdale Bible Church in 1987 and were married in 1989.
