Bio

Dan and Tracey Whitehead and their children, Jacob, Nicholas, and Lydia, are missionaries with Mission Aviation Fellowship. After 11 years of service and deep involvement in the MAF Venezuela program, the Whiteheads accepted a new assignment to Shell, Ecuador, in 2005. A little more than two years later, they share that Ecuador is feeling more and more like home, and they really enjoy the eternal spring weather of Shell after the heat of the Venezuelan jungle!

As Program Manager for the Ecuador program, Dan manages the staff and resources of MAF, while working with the Ecuadorian government, and other aviation operators in the Ecuadorian Amazon region. Occasionally he even gets to fly! Dan also leads the worship team and teaches adult Sunday school at the local church, and tries to find time for fun out on the basketball court from time to time.

Tracey juggles a multitude of ministries in addition to creating a loving Christian home for her family. She helps as an assistant to the teachers at the Nate Saint Memorial School, and has served on their school board. Helping to arrange for hospitality in Shell is no small task. The Ecuador program is steeped in mission history, and MAF has been there nearly 60 years. Many people still stop by to visit the Shell base because they were touched by the story of the 5 missionaries, including MAF pilot Nate Saint, who were killed by the Waorani Indians more than 50 years ago.

Tracey also lends a helping hand at the MAF office when needed, and enjoys participating in the ladies Bible studies that are always going on in the mission community.

Dan grew up in Iowa, and Tracey in Virginia. Both had Christian families and accepted Christ when they were children. They met while they were participating in the Continental Singers, a Christian singing group. Tracey says, “During our time with the Continental Singers, God was preparing us for a future in missions. We can look back and see how God used that time to teach us about missions, other cultures, and ways we could be used to serve overseas.”

Dan attended the Advanced Studies Program at Moody Bible Institute. He obtained his commercial pilot’s license with instrument rating at Moody Aviation in Tennessee. He is also an airframe and powerplant mechanic and a certified flight instructor. Dan and Tracey married while Dan was attending Moody Aviation. Tracey took Bible correspondence courses while Dan was at Moody.

An important verse for Dan is Isaiah 41:10, “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” “I keep returning to this promise of God when I start to worry or fret about things. He is the One who keeps me and gives me strength.”

Tracey chose 2 Corinthians 10:5 as her favorite verse. “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
