Dennis and Rose Bergstrazer are missionaries with Mission Aviation Fellowship, serving in Indonesia. Fourteen years ago, Dennis and Rose had the privilege of opening and living at a new base in Timika, Papua. From its inception to its realization, God has blessed this endeavor. Now that this base is established, the church leaders in Timika confirm that its strategic location has been successful in multiplying the effectiveness of their work in building God’s Kingdom in that area.
Dennis and Rose were the only missionaries in Timika, and one of a few western families who speak Indonesian there. This has allowed them to quickly make friends and see doors open for ministry outside the normal realm of MAF service.
Tribal languages in Indonesia are nearly as numerous as the larger islands of that vast country. In an effort to connect with the villagers at each landing site, Dennis tries to learn at least a few words of greeting in each language. As he does this, he is reminded of Revelation 7:9-10, and looks forward to the day when he will stand with Indonesian believers before the Throne of Grace and add his voice to the choir in worship to the Lamb.
Rose’s ministry centers on providing a loving, Christian home for Dennis as well as hospitality for frequent visitors. Rose says, “It is particularly satisfying to open our home to those who need a place to stay while they are getting medical care, or are in transition to or from their remote village, or just needing a few days to rest and relax.” With years of experience to glean from, Rose also has a heart to mentor newly arrived young families coming to the field for the first time. Rose shares, “Proverbs 3:5-6 is a favorite verse because it has sustained me during difficult times of change.”
Dennis was born in Harvey, North Dakota, and moved to Little Falls, Minnesota, when he was five. Rose also grew up near Little Falls, and met Dennis in high school. Dennis joined the Air Force as an aircraft mechanic, and later flew helicopters in the army. In 1974, he and Rose were married.
While stationed at Kadena Air Force Base in Okinawa, Japan, Dennis and Rose came to understand what it meant to commit their lives to their Savior and Lord. Here they were challenged, through several individuals, to commit their lives to the Lord and serve by spreading the Gospel through the use of aviation. Dennis then attended Moody Bible Institute where he received a B.S. degree in Missionary Aviation Technology, and obtained a commercial pilot license with an instructor’s certificate for both fixed-wing and helicopter. He also has a commercial glider’s license and ratings in multi-engine sea and land aircraft. In 2007, Dennis received his M.A.S. degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, majoring in operations. Rose attended business school and night courses at Moody Bible Institute while Dennis was a student there.
God calls the men and women of MAF to serve Him in unique ways. He may also be calling you to a special role in the Bergstrazers’ ministry. Please prayerfully consider becoming a ministry partner with them through prayer and/or financial support.
MAF missionaries raise support for a pooled fund out of which MAF covers salary, housing, benefits, and staff-related ministry expenses. MAF exercises discretion over the use of missionary support in the exercise of its mission and care of its staff.
