Dave and Jill Holmes are missionaries serving with Mission Aviation Fellowship in Mozambique, Africa. They moved to Nampula, Mozambique, in January 2012.
Dave serves as a pilot and mechanic as well as the program’s IT specialist, while Jill works at the hangar managing the finances for the program. Dave enjoys flying in some of the most remote places in Mozambique, especially in Niassa, where MAF flies a medical team to remote villages where people are often without access to medical care.
In 2017, Jill joined MAF’s Global Disaster Response Team helping with administration, operations, and security planning and training. She has helped in South Sudan, Bangladesh, Lesotho, as well as in Mozambique.
Outside of the hangar, Dave and Jill enjoy being involved with their local church. Jill teaches martial arts to both expats and Mozambicans in Nampula, and Dave spends time practicing English with one of their guards.
Dave was born in Canyon, Texas, and his family moved several times before settling in Ira, Texas. At age 6, Dave trusted Jesus as his Savior as a result of conversations with his dad, a pastor at that time. It was late in high school that Dave first sensed God’s calling to foreign missions. He graduated from Texas Tech University with his Bachelor’s degree in 1996, and Master’s degree in 1998, in Rangeland Science. For 9 years he worked for the U.S. Geological Survey as a Hydrologic Technician in North Carolina and Texas. In 2004, Dave received his private pilot license, the result of a lifelong passion for aviation. It wasn’t until 2008 that he realized he could put his passion to use in foreign missions. Following God’s leading, in 2009, Dave earned his Aircraft Mechanic Certification, Instrument Rating, and Commercial License from the School of Missionary Aviation Technology (SMAT) in Ionia, Michigan. In 2010, he earned a Flight Instructor Certification from American Flyers in Addison, Texas.
Jill was raised in San Antonio, Texas, and accepted Christ as her personal Savior as a 3rd grader. It wasn’t until middle school, influenced by her Sunday School teacher, that she began to study the Bible and deepen her relationship with the Lord. Jill graduated from Texas Tech in 1999 with a Bachelor degree in Wildlife Management and worked as an Environmental Specialist for ten years for the Department of Transportation in North Carolina, Michigan, and Texas. It was during college that she first felt God drawing her to missions. In 2017, Jill earned her Master’s degree in International Security Studies. One of Jill’s hobbies and passions is martial arts, providing her several opportunities to minister to children and adults while sharing this passion.
Dave and Jill met in college at Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas. In discussions about their future, the fact that they each felt called to serve in missions solidified their relationship. They were married in June 1999. After several years of going on short-term foreign mission trips, Dave and Jill realized God was calling them to full-time missions in the field of aviation in 2008. It was at this time they first learned of MAF. Now, Dave and Jill love being a part of the body of Christ in Mozambique helping to make “the ends of the earth” a little more reachable.
God calls the men and women of MAF to serve Him in unique ways. He may also be calling you to a special role in the Holmes’ ministry. Please prayerfully consider becoming a Ministry Partner with them through prayer and/or financial support.
MAF missionaries raise support for a pooled fund out of which MAF covers salary, housing, benefits, and staff-related ministry expenses. MAF exercises discretion over the use of missionary support in the exercise of its mission and care of its staff.
