John and Sherry Lemmon are missionaries with Mission Aviation Fellowship currently living in Michigan, where John serves as the MAF mobilizer for the Midwest U.S. He travels representing MAF at colleges (both secular and Christian), churches, missions conferences and airshows looking for the men and women God is calling to serve in MAF as pilots, mechanics, teachers, or technology professionals. John is also responsible for the MAF Mobilization aircraft that is used to help potential candidates complete the requirements for joining MAF.
The Lemmons joined MAF in 1978 arriving in Shell, Ecuador, in 1980. In 1992 they accepted an assignment in Quito, Ecuador, which made travel out of the country easier for John’s role as Chief Pilot. John is a Pilot/Mechanic and has worked as Maintenance Director, Flight Instructor, Regional Chief Pilot (Latin America), and Email Ministry Coordinator.
Both John and Sherry were blessed to grow up in Christian homes. In college, John sensed God’s calling toward missions so he transferred to Moody Bible Institute. He graduated from the mission aviation program with a Bachelor’s degree in Mission Aviation Technology. After graduation he returned home to Michigan where he worked for three years at a small charter and maintenance company. Sherry graduated from Alma College with a teaching degree and also took some Bible courses with New Tribes Bible Institute. It was during this time Sherry began to feel a nudge towards missions. John and Sherry married in April of 1977 and quickly began application to MAF. They have three adult children, David, Jonathan, and Crystal, and also four grandchildren.
The Lemmons are thankful for so many who have supported them through 35 years of ministry with MAF. John says; “We look forward to continuing to serve with MAF. It is a privilege to work in the mobilization department, meeting and working with so many who have recognized God’s call on their lives and are seeking His direction. It also gives special opportunities to share about our faith in Jesus Christ.”
God calls the men and women of MAF to serve Him in unique ways. He may also be calling you to a special role in John and Sherry’s ministry. Please prayerfully consider becoming a Ministry Partner with them through prayer and/or financial support.
The U.S. offices of MAF serve as a hub for MAF services worldwide. A day in the life here includes specialized flight training, staff mobilization and counseling, purchasing and shipping of aircraft parts, finance and accounting, administration of an Internet gateway for worldwide email, fund raising, printing and mailing of various materials, and many, many more activities. Some staff serve around the country; training future pilots and mobilizing potential candidates to serve with MAF.
MAF missionaries raise support for a pooled fund out of which MAF covers salary, housing, benefits, and staff-related ministry expenses. MAF exercises discretion over the use of missionary support in the exercise of its mission and care of its staff.
