He suffered, too.

MAF supports ministry encouraging persecuted Christians
December 2025

By Dominic Villeneuve, MAF pilot

Can you imagine travelling on foot for many kilometers—under the threat of death—just for a chance to hear the Word of God? This is a foreign concept for us in North America, but for many in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), it is a daily reality.

I recently flew to Mambasa, about 70 nautical miles west of Bunia, to pick up Dutch missionary Hilvert and his colleagues. They had been there for about a week, running a conference and leading Bible studies.

Hilvert first came to the DRC for a short visit in 1995 and felt called to devote himself to full-time ministry. He and his wife spent many years in Cameroon and the DRC proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ before health concerns forced them to return to the Netherlands. Despite this, Hilvert continues to come out regularly for short-term trips throughout West and East Africa.

Mambasa is frequently in the news because of violent rebel groups present in the area. Persecution has been heavy throughout the region, and the attacks are continuous, yet Hilvert and his team trusted in the Lord’s protection and went to encourage the believers in Mambasa.

During their time there, the team led a week-long discussion on the book of 1 Peter. He reported that the body of believers were encouraged by how often the Apostle Peter reminds us that Christ also suffered, and that He is still faithful in and through their own suffering.

Many of those attending had experienced their village being attacked only a day or two before the conference. Yet, they travelled many kilometers on foot to attend, such is their thirst to hear the Word of God and their trust that He will protect them. It was truly humbling to hear their testimonies of God’s work in their lives.

Hilvert says, “Over the past 25 years, we have flown with MAF many times. I am always grateful for the work and commitment of these brothers/pilots, who begin every flight with prayer. Without MAF, we would not be able to reach several areas, or it would be very difficult, especially now in north-eastern Congo!”

It is my greatest privilege to serve people like Hilvert, his team, and the believers in Mambasa, as they transform lives in Christ’s name.

Please join MAF in praying for the believers throughout Ituri and Nord Kivu who face violence and persecution.
